I need a name for this game, it needs to have an available .com web address. Please help me out and post your ideas here. Thanks!
-
psufanschipschallengegame
-
.com
Little long dont you think?
-
Not to mention a direct reference to Chips Challenge, thus the same issue is present. :/
-
how about melindas clubhouse .com
-
eh, no thanks. Little long.
-
thechallenger .com?
-
psuistheman.com? Or psuisthewoman.com, if you are female.
-
okay now, please be serious. I would really like to find a good name but do not feel bad if I do not choose your idea.
-
how about just plain " chips.com "
-
Owned by Intel. All the common stuff has been taken.
-
playchips.com newchips.com chipsbypsufan.com
-
Those are taken, minus the psufan one. I was also trying to get away from the "Chips" name.
Use this to look up domains: http://domaintools.com
-
I think its important to keep "Chips Challenge" in the address for those who're looking for it and/or trying to remember it. (Like me, switching between a desktop, laptop and sometimes friend's or school computer)
challengechiponline
onlinechipschallenge
webchipschallenge
chipschallengeweb
challengechipweb
chipchallengegameplay
chipschallengeontheweb
I checked all these, they're available. If you need other options (like you want psu in the addy or something), let me know and I can come up with lots more.
-
Thanks, but dont you think they are a little to long? You would know as a user, trying to remember and type something in that long. And I dont know if I can use the name "chips challenge" for legal reasons.
-
No, I don't think its too long. Aaand your website is called "Web Chips Challenge," Personally, I think the name of the site should be reflected in the address bar.
Since everyone knows Chips Challenge as that name, and that is the game played here, it's wise to keep it in the web address and adding one more word like "online" or "web" isn't going to make it too long. (Look at textsfromlastnight.com; it has a long title, but it's easy to remember)
The site is so small, I doubt you'll get any legal repercussions. Besides, if it does come to that, you can always just change it again later, but only upon their request.
-
Legal repercussions dont have to do with your size.
It would be great to keep the name, the link with the chips fans, I just dont know if I can.
I think this story tells it well:
A non profit company thought they could use a song in the advertisement without asking the author and got sued.
-
Melindasclubhouse.com (the world Chip is in) or bitbusterclub.com (the club he'll gain access to if he wins) would both be great alternatives if you want to avoid copyright infringment.
The first might be a little long, but the second is an average size for a URL.
-
But I dont think there very good names for the game, sorry.
-
I really don't think you really need to worry about copyright infringement. This is a totally different playing field than advertising or music privileges. Take onlinesupermario.com or supermarioonline.net for example. Both have been on the web for awhile and neither have ever had to change the name or whatnot because of "infringement." And Mario is huge compared to Chip's Challenge (a game that isn't even available anymore on any new systems). Besides, if you stray too far from "Chip's Challenge," a lot of people who might be looking for something like what you've got going here might not ever find it.
-
Might I interject here?
Ralph Baer is arguably the father of interactive media. He put patents on it. When Nolan Bushnell released the game "Pong" under the company Atari instead of Magnavox, Baer's company, Baer decided to sue Bushnell. Bushnell obviously paid cash outside of court and the conflict was resolved.
Another key point to this is that the copyright holders are looking at re-releasing Chip's Challenge.
-
But I agree with mentalmarvel, the name should try and keep the link with Chips Challenge.
How about Chucks Challenge.. I dont know, might have been suggested before.
-_- some fker in europe has chuckschallenge.com
Also Chuck Summerville and his "Puzzle Studio" isnt worried about keeping the name close to Chips Challenge....
-

You can now see the problem lol. Only 4 of those are available. I like playchipschallenge, but I dont know if I can use the name "Chips Challenge" for legal reasons.
-
how 'bout
"LilMan"
"LilChip"
"TinyChip"
or even changing it's name from chip to bob..."BobsChallenge" :)
just a thought. "BillyBob"
-
Thanks for the ideas!
-
CcFansOnline.com possibly? I like it & it's not taken. It isn't too long either. ;)
-
chipmania.com
worldofchip.com
chipgoesonline.com
-
And you want the game to be called Chip Mania?
-
What happened about needing a name change for legal reasons?
-
I wanted to talk to the guys with the copyright by no one replied at CCzone.
-
People on CCZone don't own the copyright. It's largely believed that AOP (Alpha Omega Productions) has a division that has the copyrights, though this seems to be new information.
-
I wanted to talk to the guys with the copyright by no one replied at CCzone.
*with AOPs contact information.
-
I think that we need a plot. I know it sounds tacky, but it would help with naming it and thus finding a URL.
-
I always wanted to make collectable items... (that werent lost every map)
-
I'm best at high adventure fantasy plots, not sokoban puzzle game plots, but I will try. I usually turn every plot I write into high adventure or science fiction...
Our hero is searching for the Sword of Salvation, which has been split into three pieces, but first must find three magical keys to unlock the first of the Gates of Horror in order to find the first piece. It's the same for the other two pieces as well. Once the unnamed hero finds all three pieces, he must throw them into the Future Forge so he can face off with the Evil One, Ketpia, to reclaim the world.
http://www.FutureForge.com is for sale, but how's the plot? Bear in mind that I am open to ideas.
-
Its fine but I dont really like the name. Also sword = killing mosters, killing monsters = health, health = more like zelda. Which im fine with.
-
The sword could be magical and seal Ketpia into a prison which won't ever be broken until the previously unannounced sequel.
-
lol sounds like all the zelda series.
-
how would a game like that be with tiles....
-
Hi, I have a proposition for you. I will pay for whatever domain name you decide upon each year plus I can provide free hosting (If needed) under the condition that you let me use this site to promote a game called "Ultimate Chip's Challenge". Tell me if you are interested in this or not.
Thanks
-
What is this ultimate chips challenge?
-
It is a CC fan game that I am currently developing. It is designed to do everything the original game did plus new tiles, new themes and a few extra features. Here are some screen shots of the stage that the game is at now:
A pretty standard level
(http://www.plusonedexterity.com/upload/FireflyX/ucc_screen1.png)
A desert themed level
-
Got a site?
And sorry I am not interested. I do not pay anything to host this site because its on a plan with other sites and $20 a year isnt worth having someone else control my website!
-
I don't have a site up for it at the moment but it is just a downloadable game not a flash version like yours.
Oh and I wasn't trying to take control of your site =P All I would have asked for was a small banner on the home page... but since you weren't so keen on the idea I shall have to find a way to hack this thing (Only joking).
Btw have you considered This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.cc)? Heh, would sort of make sense.
-
I was just saying you were about to take control, and I dont even know you. For all I know it could be a scam to turn my site into yours lol. Im sure you would feel the same way in my shoes.
-
Well I wasn't scamming you but I run 9 websites and I wouldn't even let friends touch them so I do understand your point of view. I do hope you would allow me to post a topic about it in your "Forum Games/Gaming Chat" though.
-
Sure, unless you plan on making a web version, which would be bad for me.
-
Now that you mention it a PHP/MySQL version with a database of grid references would be interesting... but I highly doubt I'll be doing that ;)
-
Heh, Psu, I guess we really need a complete new look on the tiles if we ever want to get away from Chip's Challenge...
-
@ Firefly, you can make chips with just PHP/MySQL?
@ CraigV, I dont know if we want to get completely away from it. But I would like earned items.
-
Well, far enough that they can't catch us legally, but still close enough for fans to find us. However, Mike's site does that...
If we go with a plot, you need to have a final level for the plot and certain key points.
-
@ Firefly, you can make chips with just PHP/MySQL?
It would have to involve clicking to move rather than arrow keys. Also the page would have to reload each time you move although if you combine it with Javascript/Ajax then that wouldn't be the case... so yeh it's possible.
-
Yes with javascript..
-
chipofftheoldboard.com
-
Thanks but I think thats too many words.
-
Lament of Freedom?
-
Thanks but I think thats too many words.
perhaps, but it's relevant (chip: instead of "off the old block" it plays on the motherboard aspect), makes sense (old: this is an old game for me, played when I was a kid on the atari Lynx and it's not quite the same game, so its like a chip of the ol' block), not too difficult to remember (it's a play on an known adage) and most importantly it's available. anyhow, that's my suggestion. if I come up with another, I'll post it.
-
ah yes, that does make more sence now, but I still dont like it that much, sorry.
-
wut about whatthechip.com
-
And the game would be called What The Chip?
-
Yeah, it's short, simple, and easy to remember! :D
-
lol no thanks.
-
How abuot chipsadventure.com
-
Taken
-
chipsquest
-
Look it up yourself lol.
-
tiletopia.com? It's available
-
chips-challenge.com
chips-adventure.com
chips-world.com
-
chips-challenge.com 8)
-
hmmm but the name is probably copyrighted..
-
MazeBoy.com ?
RetroMazeMan.com ?
RetroChips.com ?
...do you have a promo code for the webcc itunes app? I'd like to review it. ~Cheers
-
Webchallenge.psumaps.com or
WebCC.psumaps.com
PsumapsCC.com
-
I probably will change it to webcc.psumaps.com. But I was talking about a real domain, a sub domain is too long.
-
Here
-psumapspuzzle.com
-webschallenge.com
-chipschallengeonline.com
-psumapschallenge.com
-onlinechipspuzzle.com
-psumapsweb.com
-
We need to think outside the box here.
confuzled.com or something.
I'm not saying that should be it, but the point of a name change is to resolve possible copyright infringement before it becomes a problem. Most of the names here either have "psumaps/psufan" in them which is blatantly vain, or have a name derived from "Chips Challenge" though there are tiles that are completely creative.
-
computerguymaze.com
computerguytrap.com
-
One of these might be good enough
-webpuzzlemaker.com
-corpuzzle.com
-mindchallenger.com
-brainbender.com
-puzzlechallenge.com
-gamemaker.com
-mindtrainergames.com
-controtilegames.com
-
But they arent the greatest names for games...
-
How about these:
logicalmaze.com
logicalchallenge.com
questoflogic.com
mazeoflogic.com
-
Okay, I hope Psu doesn't mind if I add a criterion: it must be catchy and memorable.
-
Well, I thought Quest of Logic met both of those criteria, but I guess people do think differently. Perhaps you could give some examples of games whose names you find catchy and memorable so we have a better idea of what you're looking for.
Since chuckschallenge.com is taken, why not go with chucksquest.com or chucksjourney.com?
-
Here is what I think:
Obviously, Chip's Challenge is a catchy name. Same with Doom and Quake.
Portal isn't so catchy, but almost everyone thinks of it now when anyone says "portal."
Basically, it needs to either be short or the abbreviation needs to be cool and probably spell something.
I'm on a role-play named "LORE" which stands for "The Legacy of Riddled Eve." So something similar to that concept.
-
Because "Chucks Challenge" is going to be a major competitor, why would I name mine close to his?
-
@ CraigV: Thanks for giving us your opinion on what you like.
@PsuFan: I don't know, I was just throwing out some ideas.
How about kylesquest.com? It has the same kind of alliteration which makes Chip's Challenge catchy.
By the way, why should length truly matter? Once you find the website, all you need to do is bookmark it. Or, if you don't like to use bookmarks, you can simply write it down. You don't need to memorize anything.
-
It's easier to say smaller things. I personally like long words, but then the spelling can get to be a problem. No one calls it Knights of the Old Republic. They've all shortened it to KTOR. Why not keep it short to begin with?
Also, I have, in the past, suggested such things as "Doug's Dilemma," and "Elijah's Issue," but Psu nixed the idea. It says why somewhere in the history of this (i think).
-
Who says they even have to start with the letter? It just needs to be catchy, maybe the game needs a different/new objective.
-
How about TilemazeEscaper.com?
-
I think we have to pick a name that people know, like something popular. It depends on how much traffic you want for the site.
-
I want as much traffic as possible but it has to have it's own name and make it popular itself.
-
What are the current demographics you have? Personally, I like playing off the audience that's already there. Maybe knowing who plays this will help get it a name.
-
Thinking about what makes the games here particularly challenging--and frustrating--it's all about the fireballs. On that note, keying in on the theme. That is, what is stopping Chip from getting to his goal in the shortest time?
1. Forcefireball
2. Fireballforce
3. Fireballfrenzy
4. Franticfireball
5. Fireballcircuit
6. Firingline
7. Racingfire
8. Racingfireballs
9. Fireballshot
10. Chips&Fire
-
why do you need a name anywhy?
-
WebCC isnt the greatest name in the world.
-
psuschallenge.com
-
May I ask what Psufan means? Are you a Penn State Univesity fan?( I think that is the abreviation)
-
Yep, after I made it people from Europe told me it also stood for Power Supply Unit Fan. ???
-
Well, two abreviations isn't a problem
-
No, Im not a power supply unit fan. I'm a Penn State University fan.
-
Have you checked with Chuck Sommerville? What are his thoughts about it? He seems, generally, to support fansites, but I don't know if he's able to give copyright permissions.
-
Mr. Sommerville does not own the rights to CC. When the company he and his team of designers (Epyx) declared bankruptcy, they were bought by Bridgestone Media Group (BMG) and BMG was bought by Alpha Omega Publications (AOP). AOP is a Christian curriculum publishing company and has no interest in commissioning anything related to CC.
If they had, CC2 would have been released back in the '90s when it was completed. Unfortunately they do not know how strong the community is and thus see no profit in it.
When trying to contact them, no one has gotten further than James Anderson who received a letter through email dated Dec. 8th 2008:
Mr. Anderson,
I apologize for the delay in getting back to you. I understand that you have been inquiring about Chip’s Challenge and no one has been able to assist you.
I am the CEO of Alpha Omega Publications which owns BMG. BMG does hold the copyright for Chip’s Challenge, but the game has not been produced for many years.
Please let me know what else we can do to assist you.
Beth Te Grotenhuis
He continued to try to make headway and received this:
James,
I apologize. We are looking at re-releasing this title and others but have not finalized our plans.
Please feel free to check back in with me in about 30-60 days for more information. Again, I apologize that it has taken me this long to respond as we were working on other projects.
Beth
